The First Creative Writing Course I’ve Ever Taken

May 17, 2018

Have you ever taken a Creative Writing course before?

I never had the chance to do that until I started taking college classes at Beacon College last year. While I was going over my class schedule face-to-face with my Learning Specialist during my second semester as a college freshman, I found out that there was a Creative Writing course being offered on campus in the Spring of 2018. When my Learning Specialist asked me if I was interested in taking the course, I said yes.

Key Points

  • The Creative Writing course had a class size of about 9 students including myself.
  • The professor, Mr. Irving, was a writer on top of being an English professor at Beacon.
  • A majority of the course material focused on the tools of the craft and how to apply them in our own writing.
  • For the final assignment of the semester, all students were required to write a 10-12 page long short story and submit it to a literary magazine or journal.

Overall, I found the course to be very enlightening and informative. For my final, I wrote a short story about a war that occurred long before the events of my unfinished novel, Aya’s Curse, and submitted it to the Matador Review. I’m currently waiting to receive a response back about my submission.

I took a handful of creative writing courses in college because I was an English major. Ours were workshop-style classes, so we’d come in with the short story or poem we’d written and then open it up to discussion and critique. That was difficult at first because it was hard being in the room while everyone was discussing what they liked or even hated about I had written, but ultimately I think it made me a much better writer and even a better thinker!
